Volume I describes American history from the Age of Discovery through the Civil War and Reconstruction. It pays special attention to slavery, the struggle for women's rights, and the impact of immigration on the United States. It also presents a history of politics, diplomacy, and the wars that impacted on the course of American society. Culture is not neglected with chapters devoted to discussions of the art, architecture, literature, poetry, and music unique to each historical era.
This volume covers the period from the Civil War through the aftermath of 9/11 and the War in Iraq. Attention is paid to issues of race relations, the struggle for equality, war and peace, and the impact of technology on American culture.
